Illustration Friday: Insect

Ok, I know that roaches don’t natually live in colonies, but neither do they wear blue and red face paint so work with me on this.

However, I did learn (while researching the roaches in colonies question) that a roach may nibble on your ear if you are asleep or otherwise not moving around very much.

Perhaps more distressing than roach love bites is that a cockroach and a lobster are related by phylum. According to The Cockroach FAQ: “Beyond classification which should reflect the lobster and cockroach evolutionary relationship, the term ‘roaches of the sea’ reflects the behavior of lobsters as omnivorous scavengers. Cockroaches will eat almost anything organic and so will lobsters. They clean up the dead and dying plants and animals in their environment.”

Kinda makes you rethink Lobster Fest, doesn’t it. Of course, if roaches taste as good as lobsters….

  1. Man I wish you hadn't told me all that. I might as well and order a really expensive roach, at my favorite seafood restuarant from now on, they probably have an ample supply on hand, great artwork.

  3. I bet you would love The Secret Lives of Lobsters… go to your friendly local librarian… Will make you wish you'd decided to be a scientist at Martha's Vineyard or some similar place. Shrimp are kind of in the same class. Definitely same phylum. Exoskeletons unite!

  6. Well,, you have totally creeped me out. Here's a great legend for you – the average person swallows hundreds of spiders in his or her sleep over the course of a lifetime. I wonder how many an above average person would swallow. ..Anyway, I like your illo – it has that Tony humor for sure – and i really like your new avatar. I guess you've gone a bit buggy, eh?

  9. HILARIOUS illo. Indeed, lobsters were considered low-class fare until about the 20th century. They were the tossaways from fishing that the poor folk could actually afford up through Victorian and even into the Edwardian period. And yes, very primitive beast, actually – the crab is a more evolved and specialized relative of the lobster, too. Good stuff!

  11. Well that's food for thought? Sorry, couldn't help myself, poor puns are my stock in trade. I'm glad I don't eat Insects or Lobsters. Great picture, and the follow up post is most informative too.

  12. Great facepaint on Mel Roachson (Gibroach ??… no, doesn't work). Your mind works in mysterious ways. And that's a compliment, mind you. Great post, per your usual. And I chuckled over your post above. Don't combine 'Dick Cheney' and 'lesbians' in the same line. Dangerous. Best joke delivered by Jon Stewart at the Oscars was the Bjork/Cheney line.
